Why this extension exists

In March 2026, the original "Save Image As Type" Chrome extension — used by over 1 million people — was removed from the Chrome Web Store after it was discovered to be injecting affiliate links from over 578 websites into users' browsers.

This left millions of users without a trusted tool for a simple task: saving web images in different formats.

Save Image As Type is a completely new extension built from scratch to fill that gap — with privacy and transparency at its core.

How it works

When you right-click an image and select a format, the extension downloads the image and converts it using your browser's built-in Canvas API. The entire process happens locally on your device.

• No external servers involved in image conversion
• No image data is ever uploaded
• No transmission of your browsing history
• No affiliate link injection
• No selling or monetization of user behavior

Privacy

We take privacy seriously. Here's what we collect and what we don't:

• We never collect: your images, personal information, or any identifying data. Your images themselves never leave your device.
• Anonymous analytics: we send anonymous usage events to Google Analytics - which format was used and whether a conversion succeeded. If a conversion fails, the event also includes the bare hostname of the image (never the full URL, and never for data: or blob: images) plus a short diagnostic message, so we can find and fix the sites that break it. Events are tied to a random ID, never your identity, and the Firefox build ships with no analytics code at all. You can turn analytics off anytime in the extension's settings.
• Local save history: off by default. If you turn it on in the extension's settings, it keeps a device-only log of each save (the image's URL, format, file size, and time) so you can find it again later. It's never transmitted anywhere, and turning the setting off clears it.
